Smith.ai is the only product here with a permanent free plan, and the only one whose company also runs a human receptionist service you can escalate calls to. It bills per call, with the per-call rate falling as you buy bigger tiers.

How Smith.ai counts usage
- Smith.ai's wording: "Every call answered by your AI Receptionist counts toward your call quota by default."
- Calls from known spammers that are filtered out before the AI answers do not count, and Smith.ai gives an allowance to remove up to 10% of calls from each bill.
- Billing is per call, not per minute, so a long call costs the same as a short one.
- The overage rate falls as tiers rise: $3.00 on Free, $2.50 on Pro (75), $2.30 on Pro (150), $2.17 at 300 calls and $2.10 at 500.

- Human backup: the homepage lists "Human escalation ($3 extra)". The product page says escalations the AI starts itself have no fee, while live-agent help you choose is a per-call add-on.
- Smith.ai's human-first Virtual Receptionists plans are a separate product: $300 for 30 calls, $810 for 90 and $2,100 for 300.
- Setup: Smith.ai says you can set up the AI Receptionist in about 15 minutes.
